Chemistry Distinguished Scholars

The Chemistry Distinguished Scholars Program at Western offers a select group of incoming first-year students access to highly-sought-after courses and an amazing opportunity to connect with other science students. Up to 24 students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are selected each year to participate.

Program Benefits

  • Placement into a small group of students with similar academic interests (called a cohort).
  • Guaranteed enrollment in introductory courses, including Honors General Chemistry. These courses offer a smaller, more inclusive learning environment, and provide a gateway to genuine research experiences in the Chemistry Department.
  • One-on-one advising with a Chemistry faculty member to help chart your coursework, advise you on research and internship opportunities, and plan your future after graduation.

Course Access

You will be guaranteed enrollment in the following courses during your first year at Western:
1. Fall quarter: CHEM 175 (Honors)
2. Winter quarter: CHEM 176 (Honors)
3. Spring quarter: CHEM 225

Program Application Details

Interested in applying as a Chemistry Distinguished Scholar program for Fall 2026?

Students are encouraged to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • Will complete pre-calculus by the time they begin classes at Western
    • Special consideration for students who have taken or are enrolled in Calculus their senior year
  • Have completed one year of high-school level chemistry
  • Do NOT have college-level credit for chemistry or biology
  • Interested in a more rigorous, hands-on general chemistry experience
