In order to reduce the alienation of underrepresented minority students in higher education and to improve their career outcomes, unified support and mentoring from the Community, local Industry and the Educational System is required. Prof. Rider and his students strive for achievement in the

sciences by all students from the high school to the post-graduate levels and, in particular, we are passionate about supporting local Hispanic communities. 

Since 2010, our group has encouraged students of all ages and backgrounds to pursue education and careers in Science and Engineering.  Prof. Rider and his students are highly active in various outreach activities in the Skagit and Whatcom Counties and prioritize hands-on learning experiences. In particular, we often collaborate with SACNAS, WWU's Chemistry Club and WWU's Compass-2-Campus in order to expose students from all levels and backgrounds to Science and Engineering.

High School Student Researchers

The Rider group welcomes High School Students to participate in scientific research as a volunteer at WWU.  Admitted students will get to learn various state-of-the-art instrumentation that is used to gather data for polymer and materials science, electrochemistry and catalysis (i.e. differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, a potentiostat, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction). Students will not only learn laboratory skills but will also participate in group meetings where they will learn more details about our research projects. During the term of your time in the group, students will conduct a materials science experiment of their own. Students will conceive of this experiment, learn the background and setup of the experiment, describe how to collect the data, and how to compile this information into a presentation that will be given to the research group on during their last group meeting.

Interested High School Students are the required to meet the following criteria in order to participate:

• Eligible students are an entering junior or senior in High School. 
• Eligible students will have a 2.90 GPA or higher.
• Eligible students will have completed a high school chemistry or physics course.
• Eligible students must be interested in pursuing a Science or Engineering degree. 
• Eligible students have to write a 1 page essay on (i) why polymer and materials science is interesting to them, (ii) why they are interested in doing research, and what they want to get out of their experience with us.
• Applications will be accepted each year between May 1st and May 31st, students will be notified if they are accepted by June 15th.
• Accepted students must complete all safety requirements before the first day of their research period. (More information will be provide at the time of notification of acceptance).
• Accepted students must turn in all volunteer forms before the first day of their research period.

El grupo Rider recibe a estudiantes de preparatoria para participar en la investigación científica como voluntarios en WWU. Los alumnos admitidos podrán aprender a utilizer instrumentación de tecnología de alta vanguardia que se utiliza para recolectar datos para la ciencia de polímeros y de los materiales, electroquímica y catálisis (e.g. calorimetría diferencial de barrido, análisis termo gravimétrico, un potenciostato, microscopio electrónico de barrido, microscopio de fuerza atómica, espectroscopia infrarroja y  difracción de rayos X).  Los estudiantes no sólo aprenderán técnicas de laboratorio, sino que también participarán en las reuniones de grupo donde aprenderán más detalles acerca de nuestros proyectos de investigación. Durante la vigencia de su tiempo en el grupo, los estudiantes llevarán a cabo un experimento de ciencia de los materiales propio. Los estudiantes concebirán este experimento, aprenderán los antecedentes y el arreglo del experimento, describirán cómo recolectaron los datos, y la forma de recopilar esta información en una presentación que expondrán al grupo de investigación durante la última reunión del grupo.

Los estudiantes de preparatoria interesados ​​están obligados a cumplir con los siguientes requisitos para poder participar:

• Los estudiantes elegibles deberán de ser capaces de seguir instrucciones básicas en Inglés.
• Los estudiantes elegibles deberán de estar por entrar a los grados de 11º y 12º de la preparatoria.
• Los estudiantes elegibles deberán tener un promedio (GPA) de 2.9 o superior.
• Los estudiantes elegibles tendrán que haber completado los cursos de química o física de la preparatoria.
• Los estudiantes elegibles deberán de estar interesados ​​en obtener un título de Ciencias o Ingeniería.
• Los estudiantes elegibles tienen que escribir un ensayo de 1 página en Inglés sobre (i) por qué les interesan los polímeros y la ciencia de los materiales, (ii) por qué están interesados ​​en hacer la investigación, y lo que quieren obtener de su experiencia con nosotros.
• Las solicitudes serán aceptadas cada año entre el 1 y el 31 de mayo, los estudiantes serán notificados si son aceptados el 15 de junio.
• Los estudiantes aceptados deben completar todos los requisitos de seguridad antes del primer día de su período de investigación (Más información se proporcionara en el momento de la notificación de su aceptación).
• Los estudiantes aceptados deberán entregar todas las formas de voluntariado antes del primer día de su período de investigación.
